HONOLULU — The Hawaii softball team got over a difficult defeat by returning the favor against UC Riverside twofold.
UH swept Saturday’s doubleheader from the Highlanders, 6-5 in eight innings and 7-1, highlighted by a big day from catcher Izzy Martinez.
Martinez had three home runs on the day at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium — and four in the three-game series — including a tying solo shot in the bottom of the seventh in the first game, and a grand slam to blow open the nightcap. On the day, she was 5-for-7 with six RBIs.
Ka‘ena Keliinoi hit a homer in each game Saturday and Mya'Liah Bethea had one in the nightcap.
UH (26-15, 9-6 Big West) lost 9-7 on Friday night after leading 6-0 after five innings and 7-3 after six.
But they rebounded to hold steady at fifth place, winning Saturday's first game in the first extra inning on Maya Nakamura's sacrifice fly to score Xiao Gin from third. Reliever McKenna Kostyszyn picked up her first win and ace Brianna Lopez (13-8) earned it by going the distance in the second.
Riverside (16-24, 3-12) is in ninth place.
UH heads to last-place Cal State Bakersfield (6-31, 1-13) this week.
