A superb shared pitching performance and a timely hit carried the Hawaii baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Big West leader UC San Diego at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night.

UH’s second shutout victory of the season was achieved when Dallas Duarte went to the opposite field on an 0-2 pitch for a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Jared Quandt. Then, reliever Harrison Bodendorf set the Tritons down in order in the ninth.

Seventh-place UH (15-12, 5-5 Big West), looking to bounce back from last week’s series loss at home to lowly Cal State Bakersfield, got a terrific start from left-hander Harry Gustin. He went 5 2/3 innings in a duel with UCSD’s Michael Mitchell, giving up just three hits and three walks while striking out seven. He also had a wild pitch and hit a batter before giving way to Alex Giroux.

Bodendorf, who worked the last two innings without allowing a baserunner, improved to 3-1 on the season.

UCSD (21-11, 10-3), which fell into a share of the conference lead with Cal State Fullerton, is in its third of four years of transitional status from Division II to Division I and therefore is ineligible for the postseason, even were the Tritons to post the best record in the full 30-game BWC season.

Both teams had four hits on Friday, though UCSD had no extra-base hits and UH had doubles from Duarte and Quandt.

Lefty Randy Abshier is scheduled to pitch for UH in Game 2 against UCSD at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
