A clutch, game-prolonging shot from Noel Coleman could not prevent the Hawaii men’s basketball team from taking its first Big West loss of the season, 79-72, in overtime at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym on Saturday night.

UH (12-4, 3-1 Big West) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped — it lost for the first time in exactly a month — as it got off to a sluggish start, claimed a brief second-half lead, then fell behind again by eight.

The Rainbow Warriors rallied one more time, trying the game on Coleman’s 3-pointer, coming around a screen on a drawn-up play with 2.1 seconds left in regulation.

Center Bernardo da Silva scored 18 points on 8-for-12 two days after putting in a career-high 20 in a win at UC San Diego. But he fouled out on a questionable call with 3:26 left in the extra period and the Titans (9-7, 3-1) capitalized.

The hosts jumped ahead by seven and forced the visitors to take fouls with more than a minute left. UH got it to within four, but no closer.

In the teams’ first meeting since the Titans bounced the ‘Bows from the 2022 Big West tournament semifinals, turnovers were a game-long problem for UH, which finished with 22. UH did not play at Titan Gym in 2022 because of a COVID-19 cancellation.

Coleman scored 16 points, JoVon McClanahan had 11 points, six assists and five giveaways, and forward Beon Riley came off the bench to contribute 11 points and eight rebounds but also five turnovers.

CSUF got 24 points from guard Jalen Harris on 10-for-16 shooting and 16 apiece from forward Max Jones and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. Jones was 10-for-10 at the free-throw line as the Titans were 33-for-41 (80.5%) as a team to UH’s 18-for-27 (66.7%).

UH was encumbered by foul trouble in the first half, with three assigned to Samuta Avea and two to Kamaka Hepa. Combined with poor shooting and turnovers, UH trailed 31-22 at intermission.

UH rallied early in the second half behind second-chance points and a three-basket surge from Avea. It took its first lead at 39-37 on a straightaway 3 by Coleman with 12 minutes left.

But the ‘Bows had to rally down five with 1:11 left after Harris stuck a lefty scoop high off the backboard.

Coleman hit two at the line with 59.4 seconds remaining to cut it to three. Harris drove and this time Coleman blocked him and it went out of bounds to Hawaii with 30.7 seconds left.

Coleman fed da Silva for a dunk to make it a one-point game with 13.7 seconds left.

UH took a foul on Tory San Antonio and he calmly sank both. UH called its last timeout with 12.6 remaining.

Hepa inbounded against fullcourt pressure. Coleman dribbled up, handed off to McClanahan, and the point guard gave it back to Coleman, coming around a screen on the right wing. His shot was all net. Fullerton’s runner from inside halfcourt was off the rim.

UH returns home to host Long Beach State on Saturday.
