The Hawaii women’s volleyball team sent off Mylana Byrd with a going-away present.
UH clinched a share of the Big West title on Sunday’s senior night with a 25-13, 25-10, 25-12 rout of Cal State Bakersfield, then honored the team’s backup setter in a traditional ceremony.
UH (20-6, 17-1 Big West), with 6,590 tickets issued at SimpliFi Arena, left no doubt against a team it struggled to put away in a five-setter on the road on Oct. 14. It was the third straight season, not including the 2020 campaign that was lost to the pandemic, that UH clinched a least a share of the conference crown.
The Rainbow Wahine can clinch the outright conference title in a showdown at UC Santa Barbara (19-9, 15-3) on Friday. The Gauchos are unbeaten at home in 10 matches, but should it be required the Wahine could clinch the title with a win in the regular-season finale Saturday at lowly Cal State Northridge (9-21, 4-14).
Middle Amber Igiede, a favorite for Big West Player of the Year, pounded 16 kills on 27 swings without an error, hitting .593. Hitter Riley Wagoner added an 11-kill, 10-dig double-double.
Back row specialist Kendra Ham and libero Tayli Ikenaga also had double-digit dig games. Ikenaga surpassed 600 for her career.
Byrd saw some of her most extensive action of the season as she split time with starter Kate Lang. Byrd, who transferred from Alabama prior to the 2021 season and has led the Rainbow Wahine’s “B” side in practices, had 10 assists, four digs and a block solo against the Roadrunners.
Lang and Byrd combined to lead UH to a .307 hitting night.
Igiede had seven of her kills in Set 1 and Ham went on an eight-point service run.
UH’s 15-point win in Set 2 was its largest margin of the season.
Ava Palm led the Roadrunners (7-23, 4-14) with five kills. CSUB hit negative-.050 as a team.
