For the second straight year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-American Championships have become a proving ground for Hawaii star Andre Ilagan.
Ilagan, the reigning Big West Player of the Year out of Farrington High, earned his way into the round of 16 in the 64-player event in Tulsa, Okla., with a straight-sets victory over Dan Martin of the University of Miami.
The 7-6 (4), 6-2 win came a day after the 24th-ranked Ilagan upset No. 14 Ronnie Hohmann of LSU in a three-setter at the University of Tulsa's outdoor courts.
Ilagan, who reached the semifinals in 2021 after working his way in from qualifying via some upsets, was afforded a spot directly into the main draw this year. He next faces North Carolina’s Ryan Seggerman at 4 a.m. Hawaii time with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. Suggerman is ranked 43rd.
Matches are live streamed on YouTube.
