HONOLULU — Chad Konishi is moving down the hall.

The former University of Hawaii assistant coach, who has been at Saint Louis School as an athletic director for the last three years, is the new head coach of Chaminade’s restarted baseball program, the Silverswords announced Tuesday.

Konishi, who will be formally introduced in mid-October, will be in charge of putting together a team in time for the 2024 season in NCAA Division II. The Silverswords baseball team previously existed for only the 1980 and 1981 seasons under coach Leroy Goo before it was shuttered due to financial concerns.

Saint Louis and Chaminade share a campus on the Kalaepohaku hillside.

"I am thrilled to be joining the Silverswords ohana," Konishi stated in a Chaminade release. "Having a close working relationship with them while I was at Saint Louis, I know how special this university is. I am very much looking forward to building the foundation of Chaminade baseball and to eventually become a force in the PacWest of a sport I am passionate about."

Chaminade announced in early August it was resurrecting its baseball program and adding beach volleyball, in part as a means to boost enrollment.

Konishi was with UH under Mike Trapasso for 12 seasons from 2002 to 2013, at which point his contract was not renewed. During that run as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, the former Punahou and Cal alumnus was part of NCAA regional teams in 2006 and 2010.

He coached three All-Americans in Kolten Wong, Steven Wright and Lenny Linsky among 52 All-Western Athletic Conference players. He oversaw the UH pitching staff in particular; 15 of the All-WAC awards went to 12 Rainbows pitchers.

Konishi, following his a collegiate career as a pitcher that included a 1992 appearance in the College World Series, became an assistant at City College of San Francisco, and after that, the University of San Francisco until joining UH.

After his time at UH, he headed up the athletic program of the now-defunct Saint Francis School.

"After thoroughly researching through an impressive number of candidates across the country and interviewing finalists, Chad Konishi rose to the top of the list based on his storied experiences and significant accomplishments as a player and as an NCAA Division I coach," Chaminade Athletic Director Tom Buning said in a statement. "As an active coach in the Hawaii youth baseball community, Chad made his passion for player development, love of the sport and vision for the program clear to the search committee. We could not ask for a better leader to lay the foundation to build Chaminade baseball. We are thrilled to welcome Chad and his family into our Silverswords ohana."
