COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The lessons continued for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team on Day 2 of the Texas A&M Invitational.

They came not from the host Aggies as they did in a five-set defeat in Friday’s 2022 season opener. The other side of the net was occupied by No. 6 Pittsburgh, steaming after an upset defeat at the hands of No. 25 San Diego the day before.

The Panthers of the Atlantic Coast Conference took it out on the Rainbow Wahine in a 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 sweep at Reed Arena, handing UH its first 0-2 start since 2018.

Pitt (1-1) hit .330 to UH’s .146. Wahine hitter Riley Wagoner, who set a career high with 21 kills against the Aggies on Friday, struggled with her offense from the outset and was held to five kills and four errors on 20 swings, hitting .050. Wagoner did, however, record a team-high 11 digs.

UH’s best option was the middle, where Tiffany Westerberg and Amber Igiede combined for 16 kills and just two errors on 38 swings.

But the Panthers went on several key runs as Robyn Ah Mow’s Wahine struggled to side out consistently at 48.6%.

Pitt, which enjoyed a considerable height advantage, outblocked Hawaii 12-4, with 6-2 Serena Gray getting in on nine rejections, 6-5 Courtney Buzzerio seven and 6-5 Julianna Dalton four.

Valeria Vazquez Gomez led Pitt with 12 kills while Dalton added 11.

Saint Mary’s transfer Chandler Cowell saw her first action of the season for Hawaii and had two kills and two errors on eight swings. Hitters Braelyn Akana and Caylen Alexander were likewise held to .000 hitting, with four kills and four errors on 12 attempts for Akana and two kills and two errors on 14 swings for Alexander.

Hawaii concludes the tournament against No. 25 San Diego (2-0) at 5 a.m. (Hawaii time) on Sunday. The Toreros swept host Texas A&M prior to UH’s match Saturday. UH will look to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2017, when it dropped matches to Marquette, San Diego and UCLA in Ah Mow’s coaching debut in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
