HONOLULU — The Hawaii football team will open fall practices on Wednesday by taking it one pod at a time.
On Tuesday, UH announced a new format under first-year head coach Timmy Chang. For roughly the first two weeks of camp, the Rainbow Warriors will split into separate groups for two 85-minute practice sessions, separated by a special teams session of 30 minutes or fewer, on each practice day.
Groupings for each day will be determined the night before, UH said.
For example, first-string players might play with, and compete against, third-teamers one day, and second-string players the next day.
The public is welcome to attend practice at the Manoa Lower Campus, provided it does not use devices to photograph or record anything. Weekday practices begin at 6:45 a.m. with the second session at 8:50 a.m. On Saturdays, the ‘Bows will practice in the evening, at 5:45 and 7:50 p.m.
Thereafter, UH will conduct one unified practice a day.
Times and format are subject to change, UH cautioned.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that as fall camp begins, the UH quarterback finalists are sophomores Brayden Schager and Jake Farrell and juniors Cammon Cooper and Joey Yellen. Yellen transferred from Pittsburgh over the summer.
UH listed 109 players on its roster as of Tuesday afternoon.
The 2022 season opener is Aug. 27 against Vanderbilt at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
