HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK — The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced Kahaualeʻa Natural Area Reserve in Puna on Hawaii Island and the Kahaualeʻa Trail, also known as the Captain’s Trail, reopened Friday at noon.

The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife closed the area last month because of concerns related to the eruption of Kilauea volcano’s Middle East Rift Zone. The recent eruption started Sunday, Sept. 15, near Nāpau Crater and had four eruptive phases, ending on Sept. 20.

The state agency encouraged visitors to check eruption information from the U.S. Geological Survey before going to the area.

Over the last weekend in September, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park reopened part of Kilauea volcano’s East Rift Zone, including Maunaulu parking lot, Puuhuluhulu and Maunaulu. However, areas east of Makaopuhi crater remain closed because of volcanic and wildfire-related hazards.
