HAWAIIAN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory lowered the volcano alert level from watch to advisory and the corresponding color from orange to yellow, as the Kilauea eruption in the middle East Rift Zone ended on Friday and is unlikely to restart.
The recent eruption started Sunday, Sept. 15, near Nāpau Crater and had four eruptive phases, according to the HVO. The final eruptive phase ended on Friday, Sept. 20 around 10 a.m.
Since then, seismicity in the area is low and tremor, which is caused by magma within vents, is no longer being recorded on HVO seismometers. The ground deformation data that showed magma was moving from the summit to the middle East Rift Zone has slowed dramatically or stopped altogether. Volcanic gas emissions have also decreased. Taken together, these factors show the eruption is over, according to the HVO.
