HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announced Wednesday that Chain of Craters Road reopened as concerns about eruption hazards from Kilauea’s volcano Middle East Rift Zone eased.

However, officials warned that hazardous concentrations of vog may occur along Chain of Craters Road because of the eruption. For this reason, the Kealakomo Overlook and surrounding area are closed.

Closures for Maunaulu Trail and parking area, Nāpau Trail and Nāulu Trail all remain in effect, because of continued eruption hazards, including gas emissions and potential wildland fire, according to HVNP.

HVNP also said Hilina Pali Road and Kulanaokuaiki Campground are open to traffic. Backcountry sites have reopened, except for Nāpau.

Furthermore, the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced the closure of Kahaualeʻa Natural Area Reserve in Puna for at least 90 days because of potential hazards from the eruption, such as cracks and toxic fumes. The Kahaualeʻa Trail, commonly known as the Captain’s Trail, is also closed.

The eruption near Nāpau started Sunday in the middle East Rift Zone. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Friday eruptive activity had paused.
