HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announced Wednesday that Chain of Craters Road reopened as concerns about eruption hazards from Kilauea’s volcano Middle East Rift Zone eased.

HVNP also said Hilina Pali Road and Kulanaokuaiki Campground are open to traffic. Backcountry sites have reopened, except for Nāpau.

Closures for Maunaulu Trail and parking area, Nāpau Trail and Nāulu Trail all remain, because of continued eruption hazards in effect, including gas emissions and potential wildland fire, according to HVNP.

Furthermore, the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced the closure of Kahaualeʻa Natural Area Reserve in Puna for at least 90 days because of potential hazards from the eruption, such as cracks and toxic fumes. The Kahaualeʻa Trail, commonly known as the Captain’s Trail, is also closed.

The eruption near Nāpau started Sunday in the middle East Rift Zone. The eruption's location in a remote wilderness area more than 6 miles from the nearest road doesn't make public viewing possible, according to park officials.

Unfortunately, at night, lava glow has not been visible from Chain of Craters Road.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Wednesday eruptive activity within Nāpau Crater had likely ceased, while eruptive activity on the west edge of the crater appeared to restart on Tuesday around 3:15 p.m. As of Wednesday morning, lava was cascading into Nāpau Crater on the northwest rim, which can be viewed via webcam.
