KAILUA, Hawaii — The Hawaii State Department of Transportation will install traffic signal systems at two intersections near the Windward YMCA in Kailua.
As crews install the new traffic signal systems at the intersections of Kailua Road and Uluoa Street, and Kailua Road and Ulumanu Drive, traffic will be impacted from Oct. 7, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
HDOT contracted Paul’s Electrical Contracting LLC to complete the work, which will take place Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a release from YMCA.
Crews will begin work at the Uluoa Street end of Kailua Road, moving toward Ulumanu Drive.
Currently, these two intersections do not have traffic signal systems. Right now, if a motorist is driving from Uluoa Street onto Kailua Road, there is a stop sign. Kailua Road and Ulumanu Drive is a T-junction with a stop sign for motorists turning from Ulumanu Drive onto Kailua Road.
After crews install the new traffic signal systems, a motorist driving from the Pali Highway into Kailua will pass through three consecutive traffic lights, since there is already a traffic signal at the Kailua Road and Ulukahi Street intersection, which is next to the Adventist Health Castle Hospital.
