PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — The Navy announced the Red Hill alarm system will sound on Sunday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Navy said the routine test will ensure the alarm system is functional.

“While the alarm is primarily located within the tunnel, nearby residents may hear it as well. The alarms will sound intermittently, but this is only a test,” the Navy said in a news release. “There is no emergency.”

In response to an inquiry from Spectrum News Hawaii as to what real-life scenarios would prompt the alarm to sound, a Navy Task Force-Red Hill spokesperson replied in an email:

"The exercise this weekend is an annual test of the audio and visual devices on our Fire Alarm System. When activated, the system will enable audio and visual devices to alert anyone inside the Facility to evacuate and alert our control room monitors so the proper response can be performed. The system may be used to evacuate the facility for any reason by activating the alarms by pulling a handle at a pull station or from any of the control panels.

"This system is similar to fire alarm systems in office and residential buildings and can be activated by heat detectors, infrared detectors, smoke detectors, pull stations, and the detection of activation of the fire sprinkler system."
