HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, in partnership with the Hawaii State Department of Transportation, plan to install four raised pedestrian crossings on Pensacola Street near McKinley High School.

The four crosswalks are at intersections along Pensacola Street at Elm, Rycroft, Hoolai and Kamaile Streets.

According to a news release, the raised pedestrian crossings will increase safety, reduce motor vehicle speeds and prevent collisions. The intersections are all used by McKinley High School students and residents in the surrounding neighborhood.

In February, a driver killed a McKinley High School student in a hit-and-run while the junior was crossing the street at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kamakee Street.

According to a news release, HDOT will start the installation process of the raised crosswalks on Monday. Construction of the raised crosswalks is expected to be completed by Friday, Dec. 1, if there aren’t any weather conflicts. HDOT will place message boards along Pensacola Street near South King Street and Kamaile Street to inform the public of construction work.

The raised crosswalks are a temporary fix, as the City and County of Honolulu implements its “Complete Streets” plan for the corridor. The plan includes shortening the pedestrian crossings, parking reconfiguration and vehicular safety improvements around McKinley High School.
