The Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative awarded the City and County of Honolulu a $25,000 grant to help improve pedestrian safety in Waipahu, according to a news release.

The Department of Transportation Services Complete Streets Program and Better Block Hawaii, a nonprofit, will use the grant to improve the pedestrian crossing at Leoku and Leolua Streets, which is near the Hoaeae West Loch Skyline Station.

The improvements will include painted curb extensions that feature street murals by local artists. The project will create about 1,000 square feet of street murals in an area that is currently without public art.

The city expects installation to occur in late 2024.

The Oahu Pedestrian Plan identified the intersection at Leoku and Leolua Streets as a High Pedestrian Injury Intersection. Many of the intersections classified as High Pedestrian Injury Intersections will receive improvements within the next five years.
