Two juveniles were crossing Kapiolani Boulevard at Kamakee Street in a marked crosswalk when they were hit by a silver pickup truck, said Stason Tanaka, acting major with HPD's traffic division, in a media briefing on Wednesday.

Both juveniles were taken to a nearby hospital, where one later died. The other juvenile is in “good condition,” according to the officer.

After the juveniles were struck, the pickup truck fled the scene without rendering aid.

HPD is still looking for the driver.

Tanaka said the pedestrians had the right of way.

He also said speed was a factor in the collision.

HPD later found the pickup truck abandoned and took it in as evidence as the investigation continues.

Tanaka urged anyone with information about the collision to call the HPD traffic division at (808) 723-3413.

This is the third pedestrian to die because of a vehicle collision in 2023. On Tuesday, a 32-year-old woman died after being hit by a vehicle on the Likelike Highway.
