The department of health has issued red placards to two restaurants: one on Oahu and one on Maui.
DOH issued a red placard to and immediately shut down Jacky’s Macau Cafe located at 119 North Hotel St., citing a lack of proper refrigeration.
Inspectors conducted a routine check on Nov. 2 and found violations such as none of the on-site refrigerators held food at safe temperatures; the hand-washing sink was not accessible and there was no sanitizing solution to sanitize equipment. The inspector also noted that an unapproved live animal was on the premises, which is considered a non-critical violation.
The food establishment, operated by Meng Ngok Lei, must remain closed until DOH conducts a follow-up inspection and the violations are resolved. It must have refrigeration units cold-holding at 41 degrees Fahrenheit, all hand-washing sinks accessible, sanitizing solution available and no unapproved live animal on the premises.
The Maui Food Safety Branch of the DOH issued a red “closed” placard to and immediately shut down Siu’s Chinese Kitchen during a complaint inspection, also no Nov. 2, for a cockroach infestation.
DOH Food Safety Branch and inspectors for DOH Vector Control Branch conducted the inspection after receiving an anonymous complaint. Inspectors observed a live cockroach inspection — live roaches were present on the food buffet line, in food, on food contact surfaces, serving utensils, equipment and walls. Roach egg casing and dead roaches were also observed on or around food contact surfaces. Food containers were left open for pest entry and grease build-up and debris were evident.
The establishment, located at 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave., Ste. C-5 is operated by Siu’s Chinese Kitchen LLC. DOH is requiring the restaurant to take corrective actions before allowing it to reopen to the public. It must eradicate the current roach population, provide a pest control treatment and monitoring program and professional pest control treatment invoices, clean remove dead roaches, egg casings, food debris and grease build-up, seal or cover holes and openings that allow pests to enter, remove clutter in the kitchen, storage and restrooms areas and discard broken storage containers and properly cover dry food.
Follow-up inspections are scheduled for both restaurants on Monday, Nov. 6.
