The man convicted in the death of a Genesee County sheriff's sergeant earlier this year was sentenced on Tuesday.

Michael Elmore will spend 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter for the death of Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello.

Elmore and Lyndsey Wilcox, who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, were involved in a fight with Sanfratello at Batavia Downs in March as Sanfratello was trying to escort them out of the building. Sanfratello became unresponsive during the scuffle and later died. The 54-year-old was a 32-year law enforcement veteran.

Wilcox was sentenced to time served and five years probation, prosecutors say.

Sanfratello's children spoke after sentencing, saying they're relieved that Elmore got the maximum sentence.

"Me and my fiance are supposed to get married in September of next year and he won't be there for that," said Sanfratello's son Ian Sanfratello. "He won't be able to walk my sisters down the aisle when they get married. He won't be able to be told he's going to have a grandchild. Every aspect of our lives now, we have to try to learn how to do it without him."

Elmore was also sentenced to post-release supervision. He apologized to the family in court.
