HOUSTON — A resolution was voted on by the Houston City Council to rename George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s terminal E for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
The 18th Congressional District, where the airport is located, was represented by Jackson Lee.
Over 30 years, the congresswoman obtained $125 million in federal funding for the airport.
Jackson Lee, 74, passed away in July after a fight with pancreatic cancer.
Eight council members, under Proposition A, introduced the proposal. Proposition A permits any three council members to add legal items to the meeting agenda.
The submission letter states, “There is precedent in the city of Houston to name terminals after distinguished public officials, such as Congressman Mickey Leeland for Terminal D at IAH, and former Mayor Lewis Cutrer for Terminal C at IAH. The entire IAH complex is named after former Congressman and 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush. Houston’s second airport, Hobby Airport, is named after William P. Hobby, who was the 27th Governor of Texas.”
The resolution still awaits a final vote.
