AUSTIN, Texas — As snow falls on parts of Texas due to a winter storm, driving conditions become more dangerous. The Texas Department of Transportation has some tips for drivers to stay safe in these icy conditions.

Seat belts first

Always wear seat belts and ensure all riders in a vehicle are buckled up before hitting the road. If an accident happens, seat belts can save lives.

Slow down

It’s crucial to slow down on icy roads, especially on highways. Drivers should also turn off cruise control. According to AAA, using cruise control when driving in these conditions could cause skidding or spinning.

Be gentle

To avoid hydroplaning, use caution when accelerating or braking. Slow down and approach turns gently.

Leave room for other vehicles

Increase following distance when driving behind other vehicles to allow plenty of time for the vehicle ahead to brake or come to a full stop. This can help drivers avoid hard braking, which can cause skidding.

Be careful on bridges, overpasses, ramps

Use extra caution when driving on bridges, overpasses and ramps as they tend to freeze faster than regular roads, creating a higher risk of black ice.

Lights on

Keep your headlights on so you’re visible to other drivers.

Lastly, if you can, stay off the roads as much as possible.
