After announcing the birth of a lion cub earlier this month, zoo officials announced Thursday night that another baby animal joined the crew a couple of weeks ago, a giraffe.

On Thursday, zoo officials posted a video of baby boy Korbel on their Facebook page. He was born in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2024. Because of the timing of his birth, the little one is named after Korbel California Champagne.

This not-so-little baby is 6 feet 3 inches and 165 pounds, and according to staff, he is bonding well with his mom, Corrie.

Zoo staff have provided enrichment opportunities for the calf, and he seems to enjoy his own reflection.

“He is particularly fond of grapevine wreaths and a hanging mirror, where he catches glimpses of himself,” the post said.

The public will have to wait some time before they can see Korbel in person due to the cold temperatures, but Korbel has started to meet other members of the herd, while staying warm in the barn.
