AUSTIN, Texas — The family of one of the 14 victims of the mass shooting in downtown Austin this past weekend has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for medical expenses.
According to the GoFundMe page, Jessica Ramirez was celebrating her 34th birthday when she was shot on 6th Street early Sunday morning. Her mother Bilma Ramirez said in part:
My daughter was one of the thirteen victims that was shot while out celebrating her 34th birthday downtown Austin early Sunday morning around 1:30am. She was one of the two that are in critical condition, as of right now she is fighting for her life and had back surgery due to one of the gun shots and will be permanently paralyzed. She is currently a single mother raising five kids and will need as much help as possible. Unfortunately she did not have an insurance provider and we will be paying out of pocket. All earned donations will be going towards medical bills, any extra will go towards her children. We greatly appreciate any donations received at this time.
One of the suspects, 17-year-old Jeremiah Roshaun Leland James Tabb, was arrested near Killeen, Texas. He is being treated as an adult and is charged with aggravated assault. Another suspect, also a juvenile, was taken into custody over the weekend.
The shooting happened just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Officials say it appears a fight between two groups of people sparked the shooting.
APD said one of the victims, 25-year-old Douglas Kantor, died at a hospital on Sunday.
