TEXAS — As Texas continues to lead the nation in early voting, the latest poll from Quinnipiac University shows President Donald Trump has lost his lead in the state.

The poll indicates Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden are tied, each with 47% of the voters’ support. No Democratic presidential candidate has won Texas since Jimmy Carter did it in 1976.

In order to win, Trump likely needs Texas and its 38 electoral votes. Most recent polls did give the president a small edge over Biden. This new Quinnipiac poll was conducted from October 16 through October 19.

Quinnipiac’s last poll, published September 24, indicated Trump had a five-point lead in the Lone Star State.

The candidates are set to participate in their second and final debate Thursday evening in Nashville.

As of Thursday, more than 5.3 million people in Texas have cast their ballots during the early voting period. That accounts for roughly 60% of all ballots cast in 2016. The early voting period in Texas continues until Friday, October 30.

Nationwide, at least 41.5 million people have already voted. Of those, more than 29.5 million are mail-in ballots.
