SAN ANTONIO -- Coming on the heels of protests over the in-custody death of Houston native George Floyd Monday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an event is scheduled to take place Saturday in San Antonio.

The Justice for George Floyd Facebook Page was created by Autonomous Brown Berets De San Anto, a pro-Chicano organization focused on liberation.

Tension has risen in the Twin Cities and around the country following Floyd’s death. He was a suspect in a grocery store forgery when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck for several minutes while Floyd pleaded that he couldn’t breathe. He died a short time later.
A protest in Minneapolis Wednesday night turned violent, with fire, looting and business damage reported. Chauvin was arrested for the third-degree and manslaughter on Friday.

The San Antonio organizer explained in a post on the event page that the gathering is intended to be a peaceful vigil to remember the lives lost to police brutality. The group plans to enforce social distancing, provide hand sanitizer and is encouraging those who want to participate to be over the age of 18.
The gathering is planned for 5 p.m. at Travis Park in downtown San Antonio.
