AUSTIN, Texas -- Coming on the heels of protests over the in-custody death of Houston native George Floyd Monday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an event is scheduled to take place Saturday at noon in Austin.

The event, which is listed on Facebook, is called From Austin to Minneapolis – Justice for George Floyd and Mike Ramos.

Anger has been rising in Minneapolis and around the country following Floyd’s death. A suspect in a grocery store forgery, a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on Floyd’s neck for several minutes while Floyd pleaded that he couldn’t breathe.

Floyd died a short time later.

A protest in Minneapolis Wednesday night turned violent, with fire, looting and business damage reported.

Mike Ramos was shot and killed by an Austin Police Department officer on April 24. Police believed the vehicle Ramos and another man were in was tied to a burglary, and a 911 caller stated that one of the men the vehicle was armed. Ramos was found not be armed.

The event organizer wrote the following on Facebook, in part:

“Across the whole country, the fight against the police and for people's justice is the same. Come join us this Saturday in solidarity with Minneapolis and to demand justice for George and Mike!”
