SAN ANTONIO – The Fiesta San Antonio Commission hosted a press conference on Friday to announce that this year’s event will be postponed to November 5-15.

The event, known as San Antonio’s party with a purpose, is traditionally a 10-day long event in April that helps raise funds for local nonprofits across the Alamo City area.

Earlier this month, when Austin’s SXSW was canceled, Fiesta Especial responded to the possibility of Fiesta being canceled.

"It wouldn't mean much for the organization in itself,” said Melanie Cawthon of Fiesta Especial. “We would be out some expenses but mostly we would be out as a community."

The City of San Antonio announced a public health emergency prior to the Fiesta announcement, banning events gathering 500 people or more and highly suggesting events with 250 people or more be postponed or canceled. The emergency declaration is set for a seven-day period for now.

Earlier this month, Spectrum News unveiled three medals, part of the tradition to collect as many medals as possible to win a prize at the end of the 10-day period.

Fiest San Antonio has been a tradition for nearly 130 years.

"It's a party with a purpose, so the party must go on," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.
