SAN ANTONIO -- Disney's live-action version of The Lion King hit theaters this weekend and San Antonio Zoo partnered with Alamo Drafthouse for a special event in light of the premiere Friday evening.

  • Free goodies
  • Educational information

The two organizations gave movie goers a special glimpse into the life of characters people expected to see on the big screen.

The San Antonio Zoo setup a selfie booth and gave away free goodies and promoted animal conservation. Some proceeds of the event went directly to the San Antonio Zoo.

Movie goers said conversations with the zookeepers inspired them to want to save wild animals.

“A lion isn’t something that isn’t just in a cartoon, it’s a real animal that lives on this earth. It’s our job to protect them,” moviegoer Elizabeth Garcia said.

“Everyone here has said they saw the first Lion King. Since that has happened, we have lost half of the lions in the wild. We’re only down to 20 thousand lions in the wild,” Jonathan Redding with San Antonio Zoo said.

The San Antonio Zoo held another family show Saturday morning at the Alamo Drafthouse in Stone Oak.
