SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Missions are playing at a new level this year, but the team isn't abandoning its alter-ego.

  • San Antonio Missions Make Triple A Debut
  • Flying Chanclas appearing in 19 games

They are bringing back the Flying Chanclas mascot for several games.

The team is about to debut as a Triple A team, but the Flying Chancalas will also be back. The alter-ego mascot will appear for 19 games this season and is part of Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion. The event series targets the Hispanic communities of the teams involved and incorporates culturally relevant game-day activities, logos and music.

Last year 33 teams participated and this year that number more than doubled with 72 teams joining in. The team said its name change to the Flying Chancalas honors the matriarch of Latino families, known as the abuelita or grandmother, and is a symbol of strength, discipline, and love.

The season begins on Aril 4.
