SAN ANTONIO – First there were Los Spurs, but San Antonio's minor league baseball team is kicking things up a notch when it comes to embracing Latino culture.
The San Antonio Missions will temporarily become the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio for nine games for MiLB's "Copa de la Diversión" – or the Fun Cup. The "Copa de la Diversión" is supposed to be a celebration of Latino culture and diversity in baseball.
The team's name and logo is a nod to what many Hispanic children live in a fear of – their mother's or grandmother's slipper.
For those who didn't grow up with fear of the chancla, the pair of slippers was used for everything from disciplining kids, to swatting flies or just being thrown to get your attention. It's become a meme and even appears in the movie Coco.
"The club honors the matriarch of the Latino family, the Abuelita, and her symbol of strength, discipline and love with its on-field persona for this special series of events. The chancla has long been symbolic of the Abuelita as she maintains the structure and order of la familia," according to the Missions.
The Missions isn't the only team having fun with Hispanic themes. The Corpus Christi Hooks will become the Corpus Christi Raspas, which are snowcones.
