AUSTIN, Texas — The era of the World Golf Championships may be coming to an end. The Austin Country Club, where the Match Play has been held since Dell became its title sponsor in 2016, may no longer be hosting the event.
According to Golfweek, the normal time frame of the Match Play, usually held at the end of March, is expected to be filled by the Cadence Bank Houston Open on the 2024 calendar. At the time Austin began hosting the event, the World Golf Championships were considered the highest-ranking tournaments in the sport, falling behind the four majors and the Players Championship.
Tiger Woods holds the title for most WGCs with a whopping 18, with Dustin Johnson behind him with second most with five.
The number of WGC events was cut down by two in 2021, and with the loss of the one in Austin, there will only be one remaining, the WGC HSBC, held annually in China. However, the tournament is contested in China and hasn’t been played since 2019 due to the pandemic.
Players will be competing in Austin this March for a tournament-record purse of $20 million.
Scottie Scheffler won the Match Play last year to reach No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
