Most people know how the federal government works but how much do you know about how your state government works? Do you know who’s in the cabinet? What powers the governor has? How bills are proposed? We want to show you how government works in Texas by answering these and more questions.  

The first step is to understand the three branches of state government.

• JANUARY 8, 2019: 86th Legislature convenes.
• JANUARY 14, 2019: Budget estimates delivered to governor and 86th Legislature.
• JANUARY 15, 2019: Inauguration of the Governor. General appropriations bill delivered to governor and 86th Legislature.
• MARCH 8, 2019:  Deadline for the unrestricted filing of bills and joint resolutions other than local bills, emergency appropriations, and emergency matters submitted by the governor.
• MAY 27, 2019: Last day of the session.
