AUSTIN, Texas — On Saturday, Representative Dade Phelan was officially censured by the Republican Party of Texas. The censure is a result of Phelan facilitating the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton and assigning 9 Democrats to chair committees.

The censure was approved with an overwhelming vote of 55-4, surpassing the required 39 votes.

Consequently, the party will withdraw financial support for the Beaumont Republican in the GOP primary and could endorse an opponent.

In the full release, The Republican Party of Texas has said that Representative Dade Phelan is discouraged from participating in the 2024 Republican Party Primary.

Following this censure, Phelan becomes the second speaker of the Texas House to experience this. In 2018, the executive committee also denounced former Speaker Joe Straus from San Antonio.
