GRANBURY, Texas — A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a Granbury Independent School District bus on Monday morning.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the boy–who was a student at the district’s Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy–was hit by the bus as it was pulling away from a stop on Pecos River Drive.
“As the bus was pulling away, a child ran up the driver’s side and in front of the bus where he was struck by the front of the bus,” according to Texas DPS.
The boy was taken to Lake Granbury Medical Center, where he later died. No other students or adults were injured in the incident.
Granbury ISD Superintendent Dr. Courtney Morawski sent a letter to parents Monday morning acknowledging the incident.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students. Please join me in keeping the family and our schools in your thoughts and prayers during this devastating time,” Morawski said.
Morawski said the district is working with local law enforcement and has communicated directly with all the families whose children were on the bus.
The district will also have chaplains, school counselors and other staff available to meet with students and parents over the coming weeks, according to Morawski.
“I know you share in the devastation of this loss and may have many questions. We all have the expectation that students will be safe on our buses and in our district,” Morawski said. “We are already working to fully understand the situation and will share more information after we have had the time to investigate the incident.”
