Three University of Texas at Austin student journalists traveled over 16 hours to Greenville, South Carolina, to report on the Texas women’s basketball Southeastern Conference Tournament on March 9.

Vic Schaefer, the team’s coach, acknowledged the students at a press conference shortly after. Now, the trio is being recognized nationwide for their dedication to reporting sports.

“When it comes time to get a job, put me on your resume… thank you for being here,” Schaefer said at the conference.

This sentiment has the gained attention of some major media outlets, such as ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show.

“Student journalists don’t always get the props they deserve,” said GMA anchor Lara Spencer during its segment.

The show wrapped up by urging viewers to give their support to the Daily Texan, the student newspaper at UT Austin.

Started in 1913, the paper has thousands of readers and serves the university with life and arts, breaking news, opinion and sports coverage.

Reporters Anna Ambrose and Zachary Davis and photographer Charlie Partheymuller were the staff members who took a road trip to cover the Longhorns in the SEC championship.

Other publications recognizing the group include Sports Illustrated.

“Schaefer knows that the trek to South Carolina was a strong show of commitment from the reporters who came out (to) cover the Longhorns, and something they didn’t have to do,” said an SI article.

South Carolina ultimately beat Texas 64-65, knocking the Longhorns off the #1 spot.
