HOUSTON — Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year. The magazine cited her outstanding performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she secured three gold medals in the team all-around, individual all-around, and vault, along with a silver in the floor exercise.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Biles reflected on her achievements and contemplated her future in gymnastics. She expressed a sense of fulfillment, saying, “Because I’ve accomplished so much, there’s almost nothing left to do, rather than to just be snobby and to try again and for what? I’m at a point in my career where I’m humble enough to know when to be done."
She also acknowledged the personal sacrifices involved in continuing her athletic career, mentioning her desire to start a family and support her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens.
While she has not entirely ruled out competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Biles is aware of the physical demands and the commitment required. She will be 31 at the time of the next games.
Besides her unprecedented athleticism, Biles has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and has used her platform to address systemic issues within the sport, including the need for better support for athletes. Her openness about her struggles has sparked important conversations about the pressures faced by elite athletes and has encouraged a broader dialogue on mental well-being in sports.
Netflix released a four-part docuseries, “Simone Biles Rising,” in 2024 about Biles and her road to Paris after the Tokyo Olympics. A second part was released later in the year.
Biles is scheduled to receive the SI award at a ceremony in Las Vegas on Jan. 7.
