AUSTIN, Texas — Police are investigating a stabbing at Manor Senior High School on Tuesday that left an 18-year-old student dead, according to Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS).
A spokesperson for the Manor Independent School District said a student was stabbed on campus property by another student during an altercation.
ATCEMS said it received the call for a reported stabbing at the school at 12:47 p.m. When they arrived, medics tried life-saving measures on the student, but they were unsuccessful. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Manor Police Department later identified the victim as 18-year-old Darrin Loving, who was stabbed in the chest.
Police also identified the suspect as Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, 18, who was arrested and charged with murder. Mbanwei is being held at the Travis County Jail.
Manor ISD Superintendent Robert Sormani sent a letter to parents Tuesday afternoon, acknowledging the incident.
“This loss is devastating for our entire community, and our hearts go out to their family, friends, and all who knew him,” Sormani said of the death of Loving. “We know that words cannot ease the pain, and we are all grieving together.”
Sormani also said in his letter that he knows that the stabbing has raised concerns about campus security.
“We understand that this situation raises concerns, and we will also be reviewing the security on campuses,” Sormani said. “Our priority is to be present for all students and staff as we navigate this difficult time together.”
School was canceled both Wednesday and Thursday for Manor Senior High School, Manor Early College High School and Manor High School. Sormani also said the district will decide whether to cancel classes on Friday “at a future time.”
Sormani also said the district would have counselors available on Wednesday at Manor Early College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone who needs support services.
The counselors will then be onsite at Manor High School on Thursday, again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and when students return to campus, the counselors will continue to provide emotional support and guidance for anyone who needs it.
“Please take care of yourselves and reach out to one another. We are a community, and it is through our support for one another that we will find strength,” Sormani said, ending his letter. “Should you need any assistance or someone to talk to, do not hesitate to reach out.”
