TEXAS — Matthew McConaughey and a production company have dropped out of much-anticipated sports film, “Dallas Sting.” Originally, the film was supposed to be directed by Kari Skogland, and was nearly fully cast.
McConaughey would have starred as Bill Kinder, the head coach of a Dallas high school girls soccer team. However, an “impropriety” that Skydance and producers were made aware of quickly prompted them to withdraw from the film after investigation led to allegations.
The film is based on the true story about a Dallas high school girls soccer team called Dallas Sting. In 1984, this group of girls traveled to China and competed in a world championship, beating the world’s top women’s soccer teams from China, Australia and Italy.
The "impropriety” was specified by sources to relate to the actual story of the soccer team and their famed trip to China. Sources also noted that Skydance and producers were torn and really felt this story should be told.
The film was set to start production in October in New Orleans, but has since been canceled.
There have been no announcements concerning when or even if production will begin again.
