BUDA, Texas — During a varsity match between Hays High School’s volleyball team and Comal ISD’s Canyon High School on Sept. 2, some people seated in the student section of Canyon High used hateful and racial slurs against the Hawks.

According to a statement by the Hays volleyball team, “not enough was done to remedy the situation” after the incident was brought to the attention of the Canyon High School administration on duty.

According to Jennifer Price, who is the mother of two Hawks players, the front row of the student section was throwing out the “N-word” at her daughters and teammates during the match. Price tweeted that when the administration of the opposing school was notified, they only told the boys to “watch your mouths,” and that no one was removed from the game. Price adds that the boys continued to “heckle” the girls on their way out of the school later on as well. An SRO was needed to escort the players to the bus, Price tweeted.

In a statement from the Hawks volleyball team, the team calls this incident “blatant racism,” and while they do not believe Canyon High School’s volleyball team is at fault, the students in the student section represent Canyon High School and the administration “did not adequately address the situation.” The team hopes that this situation encourages change and stems conversations throughout the community.
