EL PASO, Texas — One person was killed late Monday night when two train cars derailed in El Paso, according to the El Paso Fire Department.
The derailment additionally damaged a gas meter, a backyard shed and a fence. It prompted the evacuation of 50 people, the department reported.
The El Paso Police Department identified the deceased as the train's conductor, 49-year-old Mario Aurelio Navarro. The department additionally reported that an investigation revealed that work was being done on a portion of the track and that a derailment device had been placed in order to it protect from oncoming trains.
However, at the time of the derailment, the conductor had been given clearance to proceed but the device had not been removed. The device likely caused the derailment and the conductor was hit by a train car as it flipped on its side.
The derailment occurred at Barton Street.
