The school district is located approximately five miles from Giga, Texas. District officials said it’s an opportunity for students to either work for Tesla or expose them to the tech industry.

“Having Tesla in our backyard, probably two miles from the high school, accelerated what we wanted to do,” said Alex Torrez, who is chief workforce officer at Del Valle ISD.

Torrez started his role as chief workforce officer for Del Valle ISD in the spring of 2021. He works on building programs and curriculum with Tesla and the school district.

In the fall of 2022, Del Valle High School plans to add a manufacturing and P-Tech program in partnership with Tesla and ACC.

“When they finish their fourth year, if they’ve not completed their associates and their certification, they’ll go on to ACC. While they complete it there, Tesla will scholarship them as they finish their certification and they finish their associate’s degree,” Torrez said.

According to Torrez, last year 46 students signed with Tesla.

“I have so many opportunities here because of Tesla and so many of my classmates,” senior Tiffany Rojas, who is taking a robotics class in the Career and Technical Education Center at Del Valle High School, said. “It’s so close it’s hard not to be interested in Tesla.”

“There’s many opportunities with Tesla, maybe I can get one hopefully,” Emmanuel Calvac, a senior at Del Valle High School, said.
