Monica Ortiz joined Spectrum News 1 in January 2021 as a Multimedia Journalist.

Ortiz grew up in West Texas before attending Texas Tech and earning a degree is Mass Communication and Advertising. Ortiz is actually a lifelong Texan, except for one year while getting a Digital Journalism degree from Syracuse. She has a passion for reporting stories that impact her surrounding community of Austin.

One of her favorite stories she reported in Texas was “Dak’s Gift”, about a bond formed between star quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott, and a young fan. That fan, Zane Dunn, had tragically lost his mother, similar to Dak, and was pleasantly surprised when the star gave tickets to a Cowboys game and Super Bowl XIII.

When not reporting you may find Monica hiking, kayaking at Travis Lake, or scouting the downtown skyline. Ortiz can often be spotted at the Hula Hut or enjoying tacos at El Mercado.
