ROUND ROCK, Texas — The back-and-forth over Round Rock ISD’s mask mandate continues, with the school district winning the latest battle with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Last week a judge in Williamson County granted Paxton’s request for a temporary restraining order which blocked Round Rock ISD from enforcing its mask mandate.

The district in a news release concerning the development said it would abide by the ruling but vowed to fight it legally.

It did, and a higher court sided with the school district.

On Friday, the Third Court of Appeals issued a hold on that restraining order, permitting Round Rock ISD to continue to require that students, staff and visitors wear masks on district property.

However, the mask requirement was set to expire just before midnight on Friday. The school board is expected to take up a mask requirement at its meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The district further said administrators will recommend to the school board the adoption of what it calls a mask matrix. Under that plan, mask mandates would be put in place based on guidance from Travis County and Williamson County COVID-19 risk stages.

For instance, Stage 5 of risk-based guidelines in Travis County would prompt a mandate.
