AUSTIN, Texas – A man investigators say participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection event at the U.S. Capitol in Washington and documented it in a series of videos streamed on YouTube was taken into custody Monday in Austin.
According to an affidavit, the suspect, identified by the FBI as 31-year-old Zvonimir Jurlina, is charged with destruction of property and physical violence on Capitol grounds.
Investigators say about 4:50 p.m. that day a crowd pushed its way past barriers and into a media staging area, forcing members of the media to flee to safety.
Investigators say some members of the crowd began destroying equipment belonging to the media, Jurlina included.
The equipment included cameras, tripods, lights, shades and remote broadcasting equipment.
Investigators claim Jurlina “kicked and/or stomped on equipment that belong to media outlets, assisted in an attempt to set fire to the pile of destroyed and/or abandoned media equipment, and incited violent acts that caused members of the media to vacate the staging area and abandon their equipment.”
The FBI further says that Jurlina live-streamed events at the Capitol that day in a 12-part YouTube series.
Jurlina, investigators say, provided profanity-laced descriptions of the riot. Some of the videos have since been removed from YouTube but the FBI downloaded them prior to removal.
In one instance, the FBI claims, Jurlina approached a member of the media and said, “Yo, your camera … is busted, boy. Your camera is busted.” A little later, investigators say, Jurlina said, “Yo, I guess we should loot now, right? This is pretty expensive equipment. I’m thinking maybe I should just grab it up and then go to a pawn shop.”
In another video, which was posted Twitter, Jurlina can be seen kicking a piece of equipment, the affidavit states.
More than 45 Texans have been arrested in connection to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
