SAN ANTONIO — As the influx of unaccompanied minor children into the country contintinues the expo halls located at Freeman Coliseum Monday night are set to receive about 500 male children between the ages of 13 and 17, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported.

The HHS said the children will be welcomed by staff, receive a brief medical check and be provided with clothing, food, toiletries and a safe place to rest.

Although 500 kids are anticipated Monday, the facility has an internal capacity of about 2,100 and an external capacity of 300 medical beds.

The site is intended as a temporary shelter.

In addition to beds, medicine and food, officials said the children will be tested for COVID-19 in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

As unaccompanied children arrive in San Antonio Catholic Charities is calling for volunteers to aid them. Various shifts are available. In order to volunteer, you must register online and submit to a criminal background check. Once approved, you will be contacted with information about a volunteer shift.
