AUSTIN, Texas – Travis County Judge Andy Brown and other Central Texas leaders have the goal of providing 50,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses per week in the area and at least 800,000 total vaccinations by July 1.

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) racetrack in Austin will likely be the chief vehicle of distribution.

The ambitious plan was approved to move forward by Travis County commissioners on Tuesday.

COTA, home to Formula 1 racing and now NASCAR, would function as a drive-thru vaccination site and provide doses in addition to those being made available at local hubs.

In a letter to White House COVID Response senior advisor Mark Slavitt, Brown and judges from other nearby counties as well as health care leaders called for the allocation of additional doses and said they are prepared to move forward with the implementation of the program.

“We are ready to scale-up this operation. We have expanded our coalition to include three additional counties from across south central Texas, giving us bi-partisan leadership of County Judges, with two Democrats and two Republicans,” the letter states. “We have identified a willing community partner to provide an appropriate location, the Circuit of the Americas, where we can easily provide 10,000 or more vaccines a day.”

There was no immediate timetable for COTA to be transformed into a drive-up vaccination site.
