EL PASO – The City of El Paso announced Tuesday it had received an additional 1,000 Moderna vaccinations which would begin distribution on Wednesday.

So far the city is only dispersing vaccinations to first responders as part of group 1A, elderly living in care facilities, and pre-registered community members in group 1B.

Those in group 1B include those age 65 and older, and people 16 and older with chronic medical conditions.

“Vaccine availability at the State and National level will continue to be very limited for the next weeks. Once vaccine production increases vaccines will be available for a larger number of persons,” read a social media post from the city.

As of Wednesday morning, El Paso has seen over 100,000 positive cases, including 1489 deaths. There are currently 447 people hospitalized, with 157 in the intensive-care unit.

Texas has seen soaring case numbers over the last several days, with the Associated Press saying the available number of ICU beds is being exhausted.

All ICU beds at hospitals in the Abilene and Bryan-College Station areas are full as of Tuesday evening, while only two are available in the Laredo area with three in the Paris-Texarkana area. ICU bed availability is in the single digits in the Wichita Falls-Northwest Texas, Lufkin-Piney Woods, Waco, Galveston-Beaumont and Victoria areas.
