AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas is on the brink of surpassing a record 13,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Among the number of new cases reported Monday was Republican Rep. Kay Granger, who said she tested positive upon returning to Washington for the new Congress.

Granger's office said in a statement the 77-year-old Republican is asymptomatic.

She had gotten the first of two COVID-19 vaccine shots in December.

People are expected to get some level of protection within a couple of weeks after the first shot, but full protection may not happen until a couple of weeks after the second shot.
