AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen, who has previously complained about anti-maskers, this past weekend disclosed that he and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19.

Bonnen made the announcement on his Facebook page, writing, in part, “2020 just keeps on giving! Last week, my wife Kim tested positive for #COVID19 and we are grateful for the many well wishes and kind words as she continues to battle difficult but manageable symptoms. Given our exposure, many have inquired about my health status, as well as that of our sons, Jackson and Gregory. This weekend, I tested positive for coronavirus and my symptoms have so far been mild. Jackson and Gregory will continue to be tested as we quarantine as a family to keep those around us safe.”

Bonnen said he and his family chose to limit their Christmas gathering to their household.

“We are unable to pinpoint our initial exposure, as we – like so many other families – made the difficult decision to celebrate Christmas with just our own household this year and have diligently followed all health protocols since March, thanks to my wife’s adamant reminders,” he wrote. “This disease is no joke in its unpredictability and severity, so please continue to keep your guard up and your loved ones protected. Mask up and social distance, avoid large gatherings, and take care of one another.”

Back in June, Bonnen criticized those refusing to wear masks in the name of personal liberty and freedom.

“You can’t say that you’re standing up for freedom and liberty while you’re taking an action that restricts yours and everybody else’s freedom and liberty,” he said.
