SAN ANTONIO — The U.S. Space Command may soon make its permanent home in San Antonio.

The Alamo City is one of six cities in the running to house the headquarters.

In August, Sen. John Cornyn sent a letter to Asst. Sec. Of the Airforce John Henderson in support for establishing the Space Force in Texas.

“Military City, USA is as patriotic a city as they come, with robust defense, education, training, research, and cybersecurity infrastructure at the ready,” said Cornyn. “Texans have already demonstrated outsized success in the military and have led the way in space exploration.  San Antonio would be a natural fit for the U.S. Space Command to take advantage of the vast resources and skilled workforce we have in the Lone Star State.”

San Antonio has one of the country's largest active and retired military populations.

The other finalists are Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Patrick AFB in Brevard County, Florida; Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska; Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama; and Joint Base San Antonio and Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs.

The U.S. Air Force will now work with the City of San Antonio to further evaluate the location and expects to make a final decision in January.

A previous version of the headline said San Antonio is in the running to be the new home of the Space Force. We have made changes accordingly.
