ROUND ROCK, Texas — The Associated Press is projecting Rep. John Carter the winner of Texas’ 31st Congressional District race, defeating Democratic challenger, Donna Imam.

Carter, a Republican, has held the seat since 2003.

Texas’ 31st Congressional District is located in Central Texas and covers Williamson County and parts of Bell County.

Carter has been a member of the House Appropriations Committee since 2004. He was the chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Appropriations during the 115th Congress. He also serves as co-chairman of the bipartisan House Army Caucus.

Before being elected to congress, Carter served as a district court judge for Williamson County, for more than 20 years.

Imam is a newcomer to politics. She previously worked as a computer engineer and tech entrepreneur.
